Lars Ulrich has presented at the Cannes FF 2013 the upcoming docu-film about Metallica's world, “Metallica Through the Never“. We met him at the beach in Cannes for a short interview about his life in music.
“Sex and drugs and rock'n'roll? Oh, you know, I've become too old for all of them. Yes for sex and r'n'r, but I gave up with drugs 5 years ago, I admit! I wanted to give uo with drigrs because I felt I was losing time and energies by being totally stoned. I liked the state and the feeling of being under drugs, some times ago, but I'm a father and now I think it's only something stupid.
About this documentary I have to admit that first of all is so strange to be here at the Cannes Film Festival to present it. Cinema and music are two completely different arts, the first full of money and mine not so much, unfortunately.
But we all Metallica are proud if the movie. It's about musicians and fans too, equally, so that's also aout music, passion, work, relatinships between people. It features actor Dane DeHaan from Chronicle and The Amazing Spiderman, and it's somethng like 'The Song Remains the Same' by Led Zeppelin, mixing live stage video and backstage too. I hope people will love it like we loved filming it!!
And yes, it's a 3D movie: i'm not too technology addicted, you know I prefer my drum to be more natural adnd rude as possible, because playing for me has to be something natural and able to keep my mind empty, and if I had to thnk what kind of effect I have ti change, I'd be fool! So the 3D is somethng I had not cinsidered so much before, but I understood it's great for increase the deep of the scenes.
Am I still a rockstar? Yes U think so, but my life has cmpletely changed: I have two winderful children, I took them to school and wake up every day at 7 am, so playing, recording and touring has become the soft part of my life, where the heaviest is the daily at home!
Napster? I don't want to speak about it, but I have to say that thanks to new technologies now we all can buy music and archive it everywhere, and whenever we want! Metallica is now a totally indipendent machine, we also produce, not only create and play…!”
